What voltages are used in relay protection

Protective relays typically operate at low control voltages, often 24V, 48V, 110V, or 220V AC/DC, while monitoring system voltages through current or voltage transformers.

Operating Voltage of Relays

Protective relays themselves are powered by low-voltage control circuits, not directly by the high system voltage. Common control voltages include 24V, 48V, 110V, or 220V AC or DC, depending on the relay type and system design . These voltages are sufficient to energize the relay coil and operate its contacts safely without exposing the relay to the high primary voltage of the power system.

Voltage and Current Sensing

Relays detect abnormal conditions using current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs or PTs). CTs step down high line currents to a manageable secondary current, typically 5A or 1A, which the relay can safely process . Similarly, VTs reduce high system voltages to a lower, standardized voltage (often 110V or 120V AC) suitable for relay input . This ensures that the relay can monitor overcurrent, overvoltage, or undervoltage conditions without being directly exposed to dangerous high voltages.

Voltage Protection Relays

Voltage protection relays are designed to trip the circuit if the system voltage exceeds or drops below preset limits. They operate by monitoring the secondary voltage from a VT and comparing it to the relay's set thresholds . When the voltage deviates beyond the acceptable range, the relay sends a trip signal to the circuit breaker, protecting equipment from damage.

Summary

  • Relay power supply voltage: Typically 24V, 48V, 110V, or 220V AC/DC.
  • Current sensing: CT secondary current, usually 5A or 1A.
  • Voltage sensing: VT secondary voltage, often 110V AC.
  • Function: Detect abnormal voltage or current and trip breakers to protect equipment. By using low-voltage control circuits and transformer-isolated inputs, protective relays provide safe, reliable, and sensitive protection for medium- and high-voltage electrical systems .
