Optical Cable Structure and Principle

Optical fiber cables transmit data as light through a core using total internal reflection, protected by multiple layers for durability and performance.

Structure of Optical Fiber Cable

An optical fiber cable is composed of several key components designed to protect the delicate glass or plastic fibers while enabling efficient data transmission :

  1. Core: The central part of the fiber, made of high-purity silica glass or plastic, carries light signals. Its refractive index is higher than the surrounding cladding to enable total internal reflection .
  2. Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index. It reflects light back into the core, preventing signal loss and allowing light to travel long distances .
  3. Coating/Buffer Layer: A protective layer of plastic or polymer that shields the fiber from mechanical stress, moisture, and minor abrasions. Thickness typically ranges from 250 to 900 microns .
  4. Strength Members: Materials like Kevlar® or aramid fibers provide tensile strength, preventing the fiber from breaking under tension during installation or environmental stress .
  5. Outer Jacket: The external protective layer, made of polyethylene (PE), PVC, or LSZH materials, offers environmental protection, UV resistance, and mechanical durability for indoor or outdoor use .

Working Principle

Optical fiber communication relies on total internal reflection to transmit light signals :

  • Light is introduced into the core from a source such as a laser diode or LED.
  • When light reaches the interface between the core and cladding at an angle greater than the critical angle, it is reflected entirely back into the core.
  • This reflection allows light to propagate through the fiber with minimal loss, even over long distances.
  • The light can be modulated to carry information, which is then converted back into electrical signals at the receiver using a photodetector .

Types of Fibers

  • Single-Mode Fiber (SMF): Has a small core (<9 microns) and is used for long-distance, high-bandwidth communication .
  • Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF): Has a larger core (50–100 microns) and is suitable for shorter distances with multiple light paths .
  • Step-Index Fiber: Core has a uniform refractive index, causing light to reflect sharply at the core-cladding boundary .
  • Graded-Index Fiber: Core refractive index gradually decreases from the center outward, reducing modal dispersion and improving signal quality over medium distances .

Advantages

Optical fiber cables offer high bandwidth, low signal loss, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and long-distance transmission capabilities compared to traditional metal cables . Their layered structure ensures durability, flexibility, and protection against environmental factors, making them ideal for telecommunications, internet, and data networks.
